You might look at the ones on Lee Valley for installing knife hinges. A picture is worth a lot of words. I always mortise slightly deeper than the thickness of the leaf. If not, you’ll have a small gap between the box lid and the case. This is an example of info not included in yur instructions.

I purchased two sets of 103’s for keepsake boxes I am making for my grandchildren. I compared the Brusso with other hinges at Woodcraft and Rockler. There is simply no comparison, these are the best hinges on the market. The installation instructions are not that good. For the price you pay for the hinges there should be better instructions; with and without the templates. I did a test piece with a handmade jig dowloaded from Fine Woodworking. i could not get a perfect cut. i purchased the templates and the installation was precise. You have to be careful even with the templates, they have to be perfectly aligned before routing. I also had to trim down the bushing to match the template. Brusso should offer a bushing that will work with their templates. All in all….I would purchase any product from Brusso, along wth the templates to make the installation perfect. Thanks Brusso.
Use the available template to cut the mortises with, otherwise you will have a sloppy (probably loose) install. The template is a little expensive but you can not do a proper install without it. I used a single template but two might be a little faster. Make sure you maintain the relative positions of the mortise when cutting the remaining mortises. I used clamps to make sure there was no movement of the two pieces. Do NOT cut the mortise deeper than the hinge leaf depth.
I have used the JB103 hinges on at least 35 small jewelry boxes over the years. They are perfect for supporting the lid when open. I have built a jig to hold the top and back flush, then clamp a pair of templates between the two piece. Accurate and perfect fit mortises every time. They are the Best Hinges Available, and have been for years.
I was very pleased with these hinges. I work as a cabinet maker so I don’t have a lot of experience with small hardware like this and was nervous about hinging a small decorative box I needed to make. These hinges are amazing quality and look great. I do recommend getting the template along with them and following their instructions although I am sure with a scrap piece of .5″ MDF and some time you could make your own routing template too. Vary happy with how these work and look and wish I could attach pictures to this review
Finest hinge I have ever put on a box. I am very pleased with them. I would very much prefer slotted screws, though. I did not use the cheap looking Phillips screws and had to order a whole box of slotted from McMaster-Carr. At least offer slotted as an option or upgrade. Thanks–
Absolutely, without a doubt, Brusso makes the best hinges money can buy. The majority of our boxes use the JB-103 hinges, but I would not hesitate to buy another size or different type of hinge or product from Brusso. When Quality matters, buy Brusso!
I only use Brusso products, period! I have never had an issue with anything I have used manufactured by them. Yes they are more expensive, but you are getting made in America products and you are getting a solid, sturdy, and worthwhile product. 100% satisfied
